Browse free promissory note templates for Word to compare sample repayment terms and prepare a draft for review. This collection contains six general designs and 50 state-labeled documents, with previews and individual download links.
A useful note clearly records who owes the money, the principal, interest treatment, and repayment schedule. Start by reading the entire sample: these files contain different legal assumptions and optional clauses, not interchangeable wording.
Before signing: These are sample documents, not attorney-reviewed forms for your transaction. State labels do not certify current legal compliance. Obtain appropriate review of interest, fees, collateral, default remedies, and signing requirements.

Download the Six General Promissory Note Templates
Each general download is a ZIP archive containing one editable .docx Word document. Extract it and save a working copy. No separate PDF is included in these six archives.
Template 06: Promissory Note with Alternative Clauses
Includes installment or non-installment options, secured or unsecured wording, late fees, acceleration, prepayment, and guarantor provisions.

Download Template 06 — Word ZIP
Editing note: Choose one consistent set of alternatives and remove unused wording. The interest clause labels a per-annum rate with a dollar placeholder; clarify the intended rate and calculation instead of leaving this ambiguity. Review guarantor and waiver clauses separately.
Template 05: Detailed Florida Mortgage-Related Note Sample
Contains fixed or variable interest alternatives, installment and balloon structures, mortgage references, and extensive default provisions.

Download Template 05 — Word ZIP
Editing note: This sample specifies Florida law and references a mortgage and additional security documents. It also uses an actual-days/360 interest basis and overlapping charge provisions. It is not a general-purpose personal loan form; obtain transaction-specific review.
Template 04: Secured Promissory Note Sample
Provides installment or lump-sum choices, a maturity date, collateral wording, payment allocation, and default provisions.

Download Template 04 — Word ZIP
Editing note: The opening refers to interest without clearly setting out a complete ordinary interest rate provision. Review maturity-based installment/default wording and collateral remedies before adapting it. A collateral description does not complete the security documentation.
Template 03: Canadian Demand Promissory Note Sample
Includes explanatory annotations, demand-payment language, interest provisions, and borrower and witness areas.

Download Template 03 — Word ZIP
Editing note: The governing-law wording refers to a Canadian province and federal Canadian law. It is not a U.S. state form. Distinguish explanatory annotations from operative terms and review compounding and notice-waiver wording.
Template 02: Borrower and Lender Information Form
Includes party details, loan information, repayment alternatives, payment allocation, prepayment, and security provisions.

Download Template 02 — Word ZIP
Editing note: The security section places unsecured and secured language together without a clearly resolved choice. Remove conflicting alternatives and leftover “Top of Form”/“Bottom of Form” text. Review whether requested identifiers, including Social Security and driver’s license numbers, are necessary for your process and protect any collected information.
Template 01: Short Promissory Note Layout
A brief repayment statement repeated in the document, with amount, place, date, and signature information.

Download Template 01 — Word ZIP
Editing note: Replace XYZ Company, the old 2011 start date, the sample 7.2% rate, and the 200-payment wording. “My Commission Expire” is incomplete wording, not a complete notarial certificate. Check every repeated copy and arrange appropriate execution language.
Promissory Note Downloads by State
The following 50 links provide individual Word (.docx) files. They are organized by their existing state labels, not by a verified legal approval status. No separate PDF files accompany these direct downloads.
Important review point: Most state files include security wording describing immediate transfer of possession and ownership to the lender, alongside default-interest and collateral-shortfall provisions. Do not rely on those clauses as authority to take property. The Kansas sample uses a different secured-note structure. Have collateral and enforcement provisions reviewed before using any file.

What Is a Promissory Note?
A promissory note records a borrower’s promise to repay a lender. It identifies the amount owed and sets out repayment terms, such as a due date, installment schedule, and interest provisions. A note can help document an arrangement, but it does not guarantee repayment.
Do not assume every note is a negotiable instrument. In the United States, that status depends on specific requirements; see UCC Section 3-104 for the model provision and check the applicable state law.
Choose the Repayment Structure Before Editing
| Structure | Details to settle |
|---|---|
| Single payment | Principal, interest treatment, and a definite maturity date |
| Installments | Payment amount, frequency, first due date, final payment, and allocation between principal and interest |
| Payment on demand | How demand is made and the repayment requirements under the agreement and applicable law |
| Balloon payment | Regular payments and the remaining balance payable at maturity |
These are planning categories, not a claim that every download supports each structure. Read the entire selected file and remove conflicting alternatives before preparing it for review.
How to Complete a Promissory Note Template
- Identify the parties. Enter the borrower’s and lender’s full legal names and relevant addresses. For a business, identify the entity and the signer’s role accurately.
- Record the principal and currency. State the amount actually advanced and when it is advanced. Make figures and written amounts agree wherever both appear.
- Specify interest treatment. State the agreed rate, calculation method, accrual start date, and payment treatment. Check applicable limits and requirements instead of copying a sample rate.
- Set the repayment dates. Identify the first payment, payment frequency, maturity date, and any final balance. A monthly amount alone does not define a complete schedule.
- Explain payment arrangements. Record the agreed payment method, destination, allocation, and treatment of early or partial payments.
- Review security and default provisions. Check collateral, late charges, notices, acceleration, costs, and any guarantor language with a qualified professional. Retain only terms appropriate to the transaction.
- Complete execution requirements. Check the necessary signatures and whether witnesses, acknowledgment, or other formalities apply. Do not sign a document with material blanks or unresolved alternatives.
- Keep the supporting records. Retain the completed document, evidence of the advance, payment records, and any properly documented amendments.
Secured vs. Unsecured Promissory Notes
A secured arrangement involves collateral; an unsecured arrangement does not provide that agreed collateral backing. Adding a collateral description to a generic note is not a complete method for creating or protecting a security interest. The documents and steps needed depend on the property and applicable law.
For mortgage lending, the repayment note and security instrument serve distinct roles. The CFPB’s promissory note explainer describes the note’s repayment terms and its connection to a separate mortgage, deed of trust, or security deed. These downloadable samples should not be treated as a complete mortgage closing package.
Example: Check an Interest-Free Installment Schedule
This hypothetical example illustrates arithmetic only, not recommended lending terms or a complete legal clause. Assume a principal amount of $1,200, no interest or fees for this illustration, and six monthly payments of $200.
| Payment | Amount | Principal remaining |
|---|---|---|
| Starting balance | — | $1,200 |
| 1 | $200 | $1,000 |
| 2 | $200 | $800 |
| 3 | $200 | $600 |
| 4 | $200 | $400 |
| 5 | $200 | $200 |
| 6 | $200 | $0 |
The payments total $1,200. A completed arrangement would also need actual dates and the other relevant terms. Interest-free or below-market lending can raise tax questions; see the below-market loan discussion in IRS Publication 550. This example does not determine the tax treatment of a real loan.
Keep Loan Documents and Account Records Distinct
The note records the repayment promise. A payment record documents what was actually received; do not mark an installment paid solely because its due date has arrived.
For a business with several borrowing arrangements, a business indebtedness template can help organize a separate debt summary. It does not replace the underlying notes or supporting agreements.
For customer invoice balances, use an accounts receivable ledger. If following up on an unpaid account, adapt the payment reminder templates to the verified balance and actual arrangement. Invoice records and loan obligations should remain clearly identified.
Promissory Note Template FAQs
Are these forms guaranteed to be legally binding?
No. A download, title, or state label does not establish enforceability. The completed terms, transaction, execution, and applicable law matter. Have the selected document reviewed for your circumstances before signing.
Does a promissory note need to be notarized?
There is no single answer for every transaction and jurisdiction. A notary section in a sample is not proof that notarization is always necessary, and its absence does not establish that it is unnecessary. Check the requirements for your specific arrangement.
Can I use one for a family loan?
A written note can document a proposed family repayment arrangement. Record the actual amount and schedule clearly, and obtain advice on legal and tax implications rather than assuming informal or interest-free lending has none.
Can I change an interest rate or late fee shown in a sample?
Sample terms need review, not automatic adoption. Any proposed rate, fee, or remedy must fit the agreement and applicable requirements. Changes to an existing signed arrangement require appropriate documentation and agreement.
Is a promissory note the same as an IOU or receipt?
A note sets out a promise to pay. A simple acknowledgment of a debt may not contain that promise, while a receipt records payment received. Use documents that accurately describe the event and obligation.
Do these downloads calculate payments or value a note?
Do not treat these document samples as payment calculators, loan-servicing systems, or valuation reports. Check repayment arithmetic separately. A template does not establish a note’s fair market value or determine tax due.
